Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October, communities around the world come together to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness, honor those affected, and support ongoing research efforts. In the United States, the American Cancer Society estimates that over 297,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2024.

Early detection saves lives. When breast cancer is caught early, at a localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early diagnosis not only improves outcomes but also allows for a wider range of treatment options—many of which are less invasive and more effective.

Routine screenings, especially mammograms, are essential tools in identifying breast cancer before symptoms appear. This is especially important because early-stage breast cancer often develops silently, without noticeable signs.

Beyond screenings, education and awareness play a vital role. Knowing the risk factors, understanding family history, and staying informed about the latest research can empower individuals to take proactive steps in their health journey.

Throughout October, wearing pink has become a powerful symbol of hope, strength, and unity. It serves as a visual reminder of the importance of regular screenings and a tribute to the courage of those battling breast cancer, as well as survivors and their families.
