Important Updates to Your Preventive Care Coverage

Starting in 2026, two changes will expand the preventive care coverage of your health plan. These updates relate to the Women’s Preventive Services Guidelines for Breast Cancer Screening for Women at Average Risk and Screening and Counseling for Intimate Partner and Domestic Violence. The guidelines also introduce a new requirement for Patient Navigation Services for breast and cervical cancer screening.

Breast Cancer Screening

Beginning in 2026, employer‑provided group health plans must cover additional breast cancer screenings—such as a follow‑up mammogram, MRI or ultrasound—and pathology evaluations when an initial preventive screening mammogram shows results that require further imaging or additional testing to complete the screening process.

These services are covered without cost‑sharing (no copay, coinsurance or deductible) when received from an in‑network provider.

The updated guidelines require individualized patient navigation services, with no cost‑sharing, through network providers for breast and cervical cancer screening and follow‑up care. Patient navigation services involve person‑to‑person support delivered in‑person, virtually or both, and may include:

  • Person‑centered assessment and planning
  • Assistance with accessing healthcare and navigating the health system
  • Referrals to support services (e.g., translation services, transportation, social services)
  • Patient education

Intimate Partner and Domestic Violence

The existing screening recommendation for “interpersonal and domestic violence” for “adolescents and women” has been updated to use new terminology: “intimate partner and domestic violence” for “adolescent and adult women.” All other aspects of the recommendation remain unchanged. This screening must also be provided without cost‑sharing when delivered by in‑network providers.
