October 23, 2024
October is recognized globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease, raise funds for research, and support those affected by breast cancer. In the U.S. alone, the American Cancer Society estimates that over 297,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2024.
According to the American Cancer Society, early detection of breast cancer plays a critical role in improving survival rates and treatment outcomes. When breast cancer is found early, at a localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 99%. Early detection allows for a broader range of treatment options, many of which are less invasive and more effective.
Routine screenings, such as mammograms, are one of the most effective methods for early detection, often identifying cancer before physical symptoms develop. This is particularly important because breast cancer in its early stages may not cause noticeable symptoms.
Wearing pink has become a symbol of solidarity with those battling the disease, as well as a reminder of the importance of regular screenings.
